Sample Lessons Enhance Listening Comprehension with the Music of Carole Fredericks
Bonjour, The lessons and activities you are about to view were presented at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages on Friday, March 31, 2006 in the workshop 'Enhance Listening Comprehension with the Music of Carole Fredericks'. Each lesson was developed expressly for this workshop by teachers who work with students of French everyday in class. My sincere appreciation to Mme Shannon Porfilio of West Seneca West High School in New York and Mme Valencia 'Val' Siff of The Collegiate School in Richmond, VA for their generous contributions to the workshop and for co-presenting with me. I'd like to thank Monica Johnston who also teaches at The Collegiate School for her additional lesson, La Musique Africaine for Grades 5 - 8. The workshop introduced listening comprehension activities that used songs from the Couleurs et parfums album by Carole Fredericks. How to incorporate pop music into the French curriculum and background information about Carole's life in France were discussed as well. Although the song lyrics are relatively sophisticated and will prove challenging for some learners, the upbeat, soul and R&B music make the lessons engaging to students at every level. Our teachers designed exercises for elementary, middle and high school learners. Our workshop participants had a lot of fun listening to Carole Fredericks' music and working with the materials. All of the participants received copies of the lessons in the handout to take back to their schools. Please find the lessons and activities in downloadable pdf files for you to use.
